Schofield Barracks (established in 1908) played a prominent role in military history as a training ground for troops during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Aloha Center, completed in 1929, continues to play a key role in supporting military personnel stationed in Hawaii.
As Hawaii’s first resilient center, renovation of The Aloha Center was carefully designed to help veterans rehabilitate upon returning to the States. All three floors of the former barracks building were encompassed in the renovation, with modern amenities, open office spaces, and conference rooms. In collaboration with the Army Cultural Resource Manager, historical features were preserved and refurbished. This project is certifiable LEED Silver.
Rehabilitating an old concrete building to meet its new purpose was a challenge at this significant historic structure. Collaborative solutions were achieved through design charrettes with the entire team, in addition to wellness and sustainability objectives to assist returning veterans.
