Built in 1922, Gartley Hall is one of the historic quadrangle buildings at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. As the second oldest building on campus, Gartley Hall is listed on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places.
The Gartley Hall renovation enhanced the learning environment for students majoring at the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work. The team applied guiding preservation principles to minimize adverse effects to historic features of the three-story building (24,480 SF), while integrating sustainable design features: photovoltaic panels, a solar tube system for natural lighting, and energy efficient equipment. The project acquired LEED Gold Certification.
A comprehensive approach was required for this complex project, which involved a high level of coordination to rehabilitate the structural foundation prior to work being undertaken. The University’s decision to vacate the building allowed the design team to engineer a new, stronger foundation supported by micro-piles. The project successfully implemented structural innovations to maintain the historic integrity of the building’s shell and to meet the University’s objectives for a more energy-efficient campus.
