HOBRON LAI
Pacific Heights

BACKGROUND

The Hobron Lai Residence built in 1916 was one of the earliest residences to occupy Pacific Heights on Oahu. Prior to FAI’s involvement, unsympathetic renovations had heavily altered the Colonial Revival Style architecture. A complex intervention was needed to harmoniously reintroduce historic features to the house and fit the modern lifestyle of its owners.

DESIGN THINKING

Renewing the Hobron Lai residence was handled with delicacy. To mend previous alterations, extensive research was first conducted to ensure historic form, repetition, and texture were thoughtfully balanced with modern solutions. Meticulously restored details helped return the splendor of the original design. In addition, a new garage and exercise unit were added to the estate. Together, the client and architect achieved the combined goal to restore this historically significant home and create a functional modern residence for the 21st century.

DESIGNER’S TAKE

Sighting unique details around the property added to its rich historic character. Pursuing the origin of a historic vent with treble clef motif, the team discovered the house was once inhabited by the Lai family, owners of the Metronome Music store in downtown Honolulu.
