The 1924 Kalihi Fire Station is architecturally significant as one of Oahu’s pre-war fire stations designed in a distinctive Spanish Mission style. An actively operated fire station, the building retains its integrity and is one of seven Honolulu fire stations thematically listed on the Hawaii State and National Registers of Historic Places.
As part of the Kalihi Fire Station Renovation, which involved 2nd-floor interior work to accommodate new sleeping quarters, FAI provided historic documentation services to meet State Historic Preservation requirements before construction was initiated. Written and photographic documentation were completed in accordance with the State Historic Preservation Division and Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) guidelines.
As fire station equipment, vehicles, and communications technology continue to develop rapidly, the 1925 telegraphic instrument kept in mint condition by the Station firefighters is a charming element of the Station’s legacy and a bygone era.
