The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is responsible for the maintenance and management of roads and bridges in the State of Hawaii. In order to effectively manage these resources, HDOT needed a comprehensive inventory and evaluation of these structures to facilitate construction projects with State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) approval.
Many of the structures were due for evaluation as historic properties. FAI was tasked with updating HDOT’s existing database of all public bridges constructed prior to 1968. The working team consisted of County and State transportation officials, architects, engineers, historians, and preservation groups. The team analyzed national guidelines for the preservation and significance of historic bridge structures to create a Hawaii-based classification system that all stakeholders agreed could be utilized as a future resource.
The working team included diverse views and interests on Hawaii’s transportation resources. Successful completion of this project relied on thoughtful discussion and open collaboration among all parties to reach consensus for treatment of these often-overlooked resources.
