AMERICAN BATTLE MONUMENTS COMMISSION
Vietnam Pavilions

BACKGROUND

The Honolulu Memorial within the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is a National Historic Landmark established by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). The site honors the sacrifices and achievements of the American armed forces in the Pacific Theater during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

DESIGN THINKING

Working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), ABMC, and the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), FAI provided design of two new Vietnam War Pavilions to be integrated with the existing Memorial. The pavilions involved careful design considerations to create a seamless transition with the iconic Court of Honor and the Vietnam War Courts of the Missing, in keeping with the Memorial’s historic integrity and character in an existing landscape.

Additional projects with ABMC include Landscape Restoration, Restroom Restoration, Restoration of the Courts of Missing, and a new Interpretive Center.

DESIGNER’S TAKE

Mosaic maps depicting the Vietnam War were a key design feature of the new pavilions. The team extensively researched the original map designers, Mr. Bob Armbruster and Ms. Mary Jacobs, who were recruited as part of the design team. Ms. Jacobs drew each mosaic map by hand, before each was delicately digitized. The unique process is known as “Paint by numbers” creation. Specifications for the project required zero tolerance throughout the entire process.
